Winter may not be the most popular season for hiking, but along with fall, it’s my favorite time to hit the trails. For my family, summer is all about beaches, lakes, and pools—you won’t catch us out on a trail getting sticky, itchy, and sweaty. While summer hiking gets most of the attention, there’s something truly magical about exploring nature during the colder months. From the crisp air to the peaceful stillness, winter hiking offers a unique experience that’s hard to match. Here’s why I love hiking in the winter and why you might enjoy it too.

1. No Bugs!

My family, especially my husband and son, don’t do bugs, so one of the best things about winter hiking is the complete absence of buzzing, biting, or swarming insects. No more swatting away mosquitoes or dodging clouds of gnats. It’s such a relief to hike without needing bug spray or worrying about possibly having ticks hidden in our hair.

2. Cooler Temperatures Make It More Comfortable

Me and summer do not get along Hiking in the summer heat drains me, but winter brings a refreshing change. The cool temperatures mean no sweating under the scorching sun, and with the right layers, you can stay warm and comfortable throughout the hike. I also love the crisp smell of the winter air, which makes the experience even more invigorating.

3. The Scenery is More Open

Without the thick foliage of spring and summer, winter hiking offers unobstructed views of the terrain. Bare trees reveal rocky ridges, winding trails, and hidden streams or creeks you might miss during other seasons. It’s like rediscovering your favorite trails from a completely new perspective. An added bonus? If the kids are running ahead, you can usually see them more easily through the open landscape.

4. Peaceful Solitude

Winter hikes are often quieter, with fewer people on the trails. Many times, we find ourselves completely alone, making it the best season to explore popular trails that are usually overcrowded. This peaceful solitude allows you to fully immerse yourself in nature, hear the crunch of snow underfoot, and enjoy the call of winter birds. It’s the perfect escape from the noise and busyness of everyday life.

Some tips for Winter Hiking with Kids

Dress in Layers

Layering is key for staying warm and comfortable. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating layer like fleece, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer. Don’t forget warm hats, gloves, and extra socks for everyone.

Choose the Right Footwear

Make sure kids wear waterproof boots with good traction to keep their feet warm and dry. Nothing spoils a hike faster than cold, wet feet, especially when you’re still an hour away from the trailhead.

Pack Snacks and a Warm Drink

Bring high-energy snacks like trail mix, granola bars, or jerky to keep kids fueled. A thermos of hot chocolate or warm apple cider is not only comforting but also a great way to keep everyone warm and motivated during the hike.

With a little preparation and the right mindset, winter hiking can become one of your family’s favorite outdoor activities. The absence of bugs, cool temperatures, open scenery, and peaceful solitude make it an unforgettable experience for both kids and adults.
